Teachers’ roles, instructional approaches and teaching practices in the social-cultural context

Abstract

Doktoriväitekiri koosneb ülevaateartiklist ja kolmest eraldi artiklist. Üldine eesmärk on välja selgitada Eesti klassiõpetajate ettekujutus oma rollist, klassiõpetajate ja koolieelse lasteasutuse õpetajate õpetamiskäsitluste ja -tegevuste eelistused sotsiaal-kultuurilises kontekstis ja muutunud pedagoogilistes tingimustes. Selleks uuritakse erinevusi klassiõpetajate vahel, kui nad kasutavad õppeprotsessis uudseid võimalusi (nt info- ja kommunikatsioonitehnoloogia vahendeid, konstruktivistlikku õpetamist); erinevusi koolieelse lasteasutuse õpetajate ja klassiõpetajate õpetamiskäsitluste eelistustes ning põhikooli I-II kooliastme klassiõpetajate õpetamistegevuste dünaamikat. Samuti selgitatakse välja seosed õpilaste emakeeleteadmiste ja klassiõpetajate õpetamistegevuste profiili, peadgoogiliste teadmiste ning õpetamiskogemuse vahel. Doktoritööst selgub, et muutunud sotsiaal-kultuurilises situatsioonis täidavad õpetajad rolle ning kasutavad õpetamistegevusi, mis lähtuvad peamiselt kognitiiv-konstruktivistlikust käsitlusest. Õpetajate poolehoid traditsiooniliste õpetamiskäsitluse, tegevuste ja rollide suhtes on madalam ning sotsiaal-konstruktivistliku õpetamise suhtes on oluliselt madal. Ometi saavutavad emakeeletestides paremaid tulemusi need põhikooli I-II kooliastme õpilased, kelle õpetajad väärtustavad kõrgelt erinevaid õpetamistegevusi või kombineerivad mehaanilist õppimist ja arusaamist arendavaid tegevusi. Need tegevused toetavad õpilaste kognitiivset (sh keelelist) arengut ja akadeemilisi saavutusi.

The dissertation consists of a summary survey and three separate articles. The overall aim is to examine Estonian primary school teachers’ perceptions of their roles, primary school and kindergarten teachers’ preferences in terms of instructional approaches and teaching practices in the social-cultural context and local pedagogical circumstances. To this end, the dissimilarities between primary school teachers when they use new possibilities (i.e., information and communication technology, constructivist approaches) in the instructional process, the differences between the preferences of kindergarten and primary school teachers in regard to instructional approaches and the dynamics in the profiles of teaching practices among teachers at first and second school levels are examined. In addition, student progress in language is analysed in relation to the teaching profiles, pedagogical knowledge and teaching experience of primary school teachers. The doctoral studies show that in the changed social-cultural situation teachers perform the roles and use teaching practices that generally proceed from cognitive-constructivist approach. Teachers’ preference to traditional approach, roles and teaching practices is lower and to social-constructivist teaching is significantly low. However, higher language test scores are obtained by the primary school students whose teachers value highly different teaching practices or combine rote-learning and comprehension practices. These practices are appreciated for the cognitive (including language) development of students and their academic achievement.
